Incandescent Bulb

Posted on: July 14, 2011

Over the years, Incandescent bulbs have been widely used for various purposed around the world. They were one of the earliest discoveries of Mankind and they changed the way the world worked. They work through a simple process. When electric current hits the filament, it produced light until the supply is stopped. The setup is enclosed in a glass chamber for insulating purpose.

The cost of producing these bulbs has been very low. Hence, people brought and used them for all these years at a very low rate. But, times have changed now and people are beginning to change from Incandescent bulbs to their modern alternatives. So, what is the reason for this change? What problem did we face with these lamps? Let us take a look.

Larger Energy Consumption

One of the main reasons for the failure of these bulbs is their excessive energy consumption. The replacements of the Incandescent bulbs give us more power for the same amount of electricity. Today, all of us are becoming more aware of energy consumption and hence we are being reluctant to use any device which consumes more energy than needed. These bulbs were good but certainly not good enough for the future generations.

Excessive heat emission

They also emit large quantities of heat. This increases the temperate of your surroundings. If you are living in a hot and humid place, you will not like these lamps. Their temperature might rise even up to 300 Fahrenheit. So, if you are trying to remove or replace the bulb make sure that you give it enough time to cool before touching it.

Another major trouble is the fact that over 80% of the energy that the lamp receives is sent out as heat rather than as light. So, it means that you are wasting energy for nothing. On the other hand, if you go with the modern bulbs, they will save you large amounts of money as well as energy in the long term.

Poor efficiency

If efficiency is your major choice, then Incandescent lamps will fail you badly. These lamps are the least efficient when you compare them with other lamps like LED or Fluorescent. It converts only around 10-20% of the energy given into light where the rest is emitted out as waste heat.

Shorter Lifetime

These bulbs also live only for a shorter period of time. Imagine that you have installed them in the ceiling of your house. How will you manage to go to the ceiling to change it if it lives only for five or six months? The shorter life time means that you constantly have to replace the bulb which will consume your valuable time.

Most countries around the world have decided that these Incandescent bulbs consume large energy and hence they have vowed to make it obsolete within the coming years. Countries like England have already made steps in order to do that. Incandescent bulbs may have been our first source of light but it is time that we put them to rest.
